-Setting Up:

  • Place participants on the court as shown on the illustration.

  • Give each team a ball (X1, Y1, and Z1).

-Instructions:

  • At the signal to begin, player number 1 from each of the team passes the ball (set or forearm pass) to player number 2 behind the attack line, who then passes the ball back over the net to player number 3, and so on.

  • Play continues until the ball is not successfully passed over the net.

  • Count how many times each team consecutively goes through the complete rotation. Have players try again following an errant pass.

-Questions & Notes:

  • Safety considerations:

    • Be sure posts are properly padded.

  • Instructional tips:

    • Teachers may need to observe for illegal passes (carrying the ball, double hitting the ball). Use different passes (start with any hit, and then limit the passes to overhead passes, and then to just forearm passes).

  • Variation:

    • Running Volleyball Relay:

    • The same as Volleyball Relay except that a pylon is placed 3-6 paces behind the attack line. Each time a player sets the ball the setter must run around the pylon and then get ready to make the next pass.

    • Long-ball Volleyball Relay: Choose a line 3 metres in front of the back court line. All passes must be taken between the back court line and the line 3 metres from the back court line. Any pass taken from outside this area is considered a fault and play is stopped. Count the successful rotations and try again.

  • As a cool-down:

    • Increase the number of players per team to reduce the amount of running and vigor of the activity.
